Sign-in looping, or stuck?
Meta AI signs you in through your browser rather than inside the app, which is why sign-in problems almost never live in the app at all. A stale cookie, a second Meta account, or a browser that never hands back those three account for nearly everything.
Independent guide not affiliated with Meta. We cannot recover or unlock a Meta account; for anything account-side, see this section.
Sign-in does not happen in the app
There is no username box in Meta AI. Clicking sign in opens your default browser, you authorise there against your Meta account, and the browser hands a session back to the app. Three moving parts, two of which are nothing to do with the Mac app.
This is why “reinstall the app” almost never fixes a login problem, and why clearing browser cookies almost always does.
It also explains the classic failure. If that browser is already signed into a different Meta account, the flow completes instantly against the wrong one and the app, which was expecting the account you chose, sends you back to try again. Round and round, with no error message that says so.
The other break points are mundane: a default browser that is not the one you live in, a content blocker or VPN that stops the Meta login page loading, or a privacy setting that discards the session the moment the browser quits.
The 90-second fix
This clears the great majority of sign-in problems, including the loop. Do it in order the sequence matters more than any individual step.
Quit Meta AI properly
⌘Q, not just closing the window. You want nothing holding a half-finished session while you clean up.
Sign out in your browser
Open Facebook, Instagram or your Meta account page in the default browser and sign out there including any second account.
Clear the Meta cookies
Remove cookies and site data for meta.ai, meta.com, facebook.com and instagram.com. This is the step that usually does it.
Check which browser is default
System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Default web browser. The app will use that one whether or not you expect it to.
Turn off the VPN for a minute
And any content blocker. Both can stop the Meta login page loading or completing its redirect.
Start the sign-in again
Open Meta AI, choose sign in, and complete the whole flow in the browser window it opens do not open a second tab to finish it.
Let it hand back
Approve the prompt that returns you to the app. Closing the browser window early is a surprisingly common way to break the last step.
Check which account you landed on
In app settings. If it is the wrong one, you have a second-account problem rather than a cookie problem.
Still stuck after all eight? Test the same account at meta.ai in a browser. If that fails too, the problem is the account or the service rather than the Mac app the general checklist covers how to tell.
What you are seeing, and what it usually means
| Symptom | Usual cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Loops back to the browser, forever | Stale session | The classic. Run the 90-second fix, paying attention to the cookie step. |
| Signs in as the wrong account | Second account | The browser was already signed in as someone else. Sign out there first, then retry. More. |
| Nothing happens when you click sign in | Browser not opening | Check a default browser is set and can launch. A blocked or broken default is usually the cause. |
| Login page will not load | Network or blocker | VPN, corporate proxy or content blocker. Turn each off briefly and try again. |
| “Something went wrong”, no detail | Service or session | Test meta.ai in a browser. If that also fails, wait it out how to tell. |
| Signed out after every restart | Cookies cleared on quit | A privacy setting or profile that discards site data. Allow it for Meta domains. |
| Asks for two-factor every time | Device not remembered | Tick the option to trust the device during the flow, and make sure cookies survive the browser closing. |
| Signed in, but no conversations | Different account | History belongs to the account, not the app. Check which one is signed in under settings. |
| Works in the browser, not the app | Handback failing | Complete the flow in the window the app opened, and do not close it before it returns you. |
| Account checkpoint or restriction | Account-side | Nothing on the Mac will fix it. Resolve it with Meta first. |
Which account are you actually using?
One Meta account, reachable three ways. People routinely sign in through one door on their phone and a different door on the Mac, then wonder where their conversations went.
Check before you troubleshoot
App settings show the signed-in account. If it is not the one you expected, stop no amount of cookie clearing fixes being on the wrong account.
Switching means two sign-outs
Sign out in the app and in the browser. Miss the second and the app will quietly sign straight back into the account you were leaving.
Work and personal in one browser
If you juggle two Meta accounts, a separate browser profile for each is the only arrangement that stays untangled.
When the account itself is the blocker
Some sign-in failures have nothing to do with your Mac, your browser or the app. A security checkpoint, a locked or restricted account, an unverified email, a lost authenticator or an account under review will all stop the flow dead and the app has no way to tell you which.
The tell is simple: if signing into meta.ai in a browser fails the same way, the Mac app was never the problem.
These have to be resolved on Meta’s side, through its own account help and recovery routes. We are an independent guide we cannot unlock, verify or recover anyone’s account, and anyone who claims they can for a fee is worth walking away from.
Two related cases worth ruling out: the app is not available in every country yet, so a move or a trip can change what works (check availability), and some organisations restrict which apps may use a managed account at all in which case the browser version may still be an option (app vs browser).
Sign-in questions
Why does sign-in loop back to the browser?
A stale session cookie, or a second Meta account already signed in there. Quit the app, sign out in the browser, clear the Meta cookies and run the flow again in the window the app opens. The 90-second fix.
Which account does the Mac app use?
A Meta account, reached through Facebook, Instagram or on its own. Whichever you choose owns your conversations, your usage limits and any Meta One subscription. More on accounts.
How do I switch accounts?
Sign out in the app, then sign out of the old account in your browser as well. Skipping the second half is why people find themselves straight back on the account they were trying to leave.
Why am I signed out after every restart?
The browser is discarding site data a privacy setting, a profile that clears on quit, or a strict content blocker. Allow cookies for the Meta domains and sign in again.
Clicking sign in does nothing at all.
The app is trying to open your default browser. Check one is set in System Settings → Desktop & Dock, and that it launches normally. A VPN or blocker can also stop the page loading once it opens.
I am signed in but all my chats are gone.
Almost always the wrong account rather than lost data history lives with the account. Check which one is shown in settings and sign in with the other.
Will reinstalling fix it?
Rarely. Sign-in happens in your browser, so reinstalling changes nothing about the part that is failing. Clear cookies first; a clean reinstall is a last resort.
Does two-factor authentication cause this?
It can, if the device is never remembered every launch then means another code. Trust the device during the flow and let the browser keep its cookies.
How do I know if it is Meta rather than me?
Sign into meta.ai in a browser with the same account. If that fails identically, it is the account or the service not your Mac. The wider checklist.
Can you recover my Meta account?
No. We are an independent guide with no access to anyone’s account. Account recovery, checkpoints and restrictions go through Meta’s own help channels and anyone offering to do it for a fee should be avoided.
Clear the cookies before you clear the app.
Sign-in lives in your browser, so that is where the fix lives too. Ninety seconds, in order, and the loop usually ends.
