Meta AI on Mac is free. Here is the catch.
Free to download, no trial, no card, and nothing expires. What is rationed is compute image generation, video and the heaviest sessions all sit behind usage limits, and a Meta One subscription raises those ceilings rather than unlocking anything.

Yes, it is free in the way that matters
“Free” gets used loosely in AI products, so here is the precise version: nothing is time-limited, nothing is locked behind a paywall, and no payment details are requested. The constraint is volume, not access.
The app is free
A 16 MB download from Meta, no purchase, no licence key. Installing asks for a Meta account and nothing else. Install guide.
There is no trial
No countdown, no “14 days remaining”, nothing that switches off. The free tier is a permanent tier rather than a sample of a paid one.
Compute is what meters
Text chat is effectively unlimited for normal use. Image generation, editing and video are the things that stop. Where the ceilings are.
One honest caveat: Meta publishes no exact allowances, and they have moved during the beta. Everything below describes behaviour we have seen since the September launch, not a contract Meta One pricing tracks changes as they land.
What actually meters, and what never does
The pattern is simple once you see it: text is cheap, pixels are not. A long conversation costs Meta a fraction of what one video clip costs, so chat, window sharing and dictation run without a meaningful cap while generation is rationed.
If you use Meta AI the way most people use a desktop assistant drafting, summarising, asking about a window you will likely never see a limit message at all.
Where people do hit walls, it is almost always the same sequence: an afternoon making social images, or a handful of video clips in a row. Video is the most expensive thing in the product and the first to stop; image generation comes next, and image editing sits somewhere between the two.
Limits refill on a rolling window rather than a calendar month, so hitting one in the morning does not write off your day. And when generation is paused, the rest of the app keeps working you can still chat while the image allowance recovers.
| Feature | On the free tier | With Meta One | In practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text chat | Included | Higher ceilings at peak times | Normal use never hits a wall. Extremely long sessions can slow down before they stop. |
| Window sharing | Included | No difference | Attaching a window costs a screenshot and some text. Not a metered feature. |
| Dictation | Included | No difference | Transcription is cheap. Dictate all day if you like. |
| File uploads | Included | Larger files, longer documents | Size caps rather than counts. Very long PDFs are where the free tier complains. |
| Image generation | Metered | Substantially more | The first limit most people meet, usually mid-way through a batch of social posts. |
| Image editing | Metered | Substantially more | Counts against a similar pool to generation. Iterating on one image adds up quickly. |
| Video generation | Tightly metered | The main reason to upgrade | The most expensive thing in the product and the first to stop. Also narrower by country. |
| Priority at busy times | Best effort | Prioritised | Rarely noticeable on a weekday morning; more so during a launch week. |
| Muse (the agent) | Weekly limits | Higher weekly limits | Separate app, separate allowance, US only at launch. Muse pricing. |
Meta does not publish per-feature numbers, and the app shows you where you stand rather than a counter. If a feature stops with a limit message, that is the allowance talking not a fault.
What Meta One costs
Meta One arrived globally on September 16, 2026, folding every paid Meta tier into one subscription and gathering more than 15 million subscriptions and trial sign-ups in its first days. For Mac users it is one thing only: higher ceilings on the features that meter.
A single app or feature. The cheapest way in if there is exactly one thing you keep running out of.
Core$7.99 / moThree standalone plans bundled plus more AI usage generation, editing and video. Around $11 bought separately.
Premium$19.99 / moCore again with higher limits and the premium-only capabilities on top. For people generating daily.
Creator & business$14.99–$499 / moVerified badges, impersonation protection, 24/7 support, scheduling, exportable analytics and team accounts.
US monthly rates as of the September 16, 2026 launch; prices vary by region, app and account type, and Meta’s stated position is that the core experience across its apps and Meta AI stays free. Already paying for something? Compare against Meta Verified, Instagram Plus and WhatsApp Plus before adding another line.
Do you actually need to pay?
Find the line that sounds like your week. Most Mac users belong in the first row and should stop reading there.
| If your week looks like… | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Drafting, summarising, asking about windows | Stay free | None of it meters. Paying buys you nothing you would notice. |
| An image or two a week for a post | Stay free | Well inside the allowance, and it refills faster than you use it. |
| Batches of images for social, weekly | Standalone or Core | This is where the first wall appears. Standalone if images are the only thing; Core if you also want video. |
| Video clips as part of the job | Core, then Premium | Video is the tightest allowance by a distance. Start at Core and move up only if you hit that too. |
| Running accounts for a brand or clients | Creator or business | The badges, analytics, scheduling and support are the point, not the AI ceilings. For creators. |
| Curious, just installed it | Wait | Use it free for a fortnight. If you never see a limit message, you have your answer. |
Four things a subscription does not change
The Mac requirements
Apple silicon and macOS 15 remain non-negotiable. No plan makes the app run on an Intel Mac. Requirements.
What Meta trains on
Paying is not a privacy setting. The data position is the same on every tier. Permissions and privacy.
Where things are available
A subscription does not switch on features your country does not have, and Muse stays US-only for now. Availability.
What the app can do
It still reads and replies rather than acting. Paying does not turn Meta AI into an agent that is a different app.
Subscribing happens on your Meta account rather than in the Mac app, and it applies everywhere you are signed in phone, web and desktop together. Cancelling works the same way and takes effect at the end of the billing period, leaving you back on the free tier with everything except the higher ceilings. The step-by-step is on how to subscribe.
Pricing questions people actually ask
Is Meta AI free on Mac?
Yes. The app is free to download and use, with no trial and no payment details at install. What is limited is compute-heavy work image generation, editing and video. What meters.
Is there a trial that runs out?
No. Nothing counts down and nothing switches off. The free tier is permanent; a Meta One subscription is an optional upgrade on top of it.
Do I need to enter card details?
Not to install or use the app. Card details only come into it if you choose to subscribe, which happens on your Meta account rather than in the Mac app.
What happens when I hit a limit?
The app says the allowance for that feature is spent, and it returns after a rolling window. Chat usually keeps working while image or video generation is paused it is not a lockout of the whole app.
How many images can I generate for free?
Meta publishes no number, and it has moved during the beta. In practice a couple of images a week never troubles the allowance, while a batch of a dozen in one sitting can. Muse Image pricing tracks what we see.
Did anything I had become paid?
No. When Meta One launched in September 2026 nothing that was free stopped being free; the compute-heavy AI features simply got firmer rate limits on the free tier. Meta One vs free.
Which tier should I pick?
Standalone if exactly one feature keeps running out, Core if you want images and video together, Premium only if Core stops being enough. The table above matches tiers to how you actually work, and Core vs Premium goes deeper.
Does paying make it faster?
Marginally, and mostly when Meta’s servers are busy paid tiers get priority. On an ordinary weekday you are unlikely to notice a difference in speed, only in how much you can generate.
Is Muse free as well?
Muse is free with weekly limits and paid tiers raise them, but it is a separate Mac app with a separate allowance, US-only at launch. Muse pricing · how it differs.
Can I cancel easily?
Yes, from your Meta account subscription settings. It runs to the end of the billing period and then drops you back to the free tier the app keeps working, just with the original ceilings. Subscribe and cancel.
Free is the right place to start.
Install it, use it for a fortnight, and let the limits tell you whether a subscription is worth it. Most people never find out.
