A tidy-up, not a new bill.
Meta One collapsed the scattered paid tiers Meta used to run across its apps into a single subscription with one ladder. The part worth being clear about first: nothing you already had became paid. What changed on the free tier is that the compute-heavy AI features picked up firmer rate limits, which is a different thing and affects far fewer people than the launch coverage suggested.
One subscription where several used to be
Meta ran a handful of separate paid products across its apps. Meta One folded them into a single ladder, rolled out worldwide on 16 September 2026, and gathered more than 15 million subscriptions and trial sign-ups in its first days.
The thing most coverage buried
Consolidations usually arrive alongside a price rise, so the assumption was that something free had been taken away. It had not. Meta’s position is that the core experience across its apps and Meta AI stays free, and on a Mac that holds up the assistant, the shortcut, window sharing and dictation all work without paying anything.
What did change is narrower: the features that cost Meta real compute image generation, video and long sessions now hit firmer limits on the free tier. If you do not generate images or video in volume, you will most likely never meet them.
Everything on this page is the shape of the offer rather than a quote. Regional pricing, trial terms and what each tier includes are Meta’s to state and change our pricing page tracks the detail, and Meta’s own terms supersede both.
The four tiers, and what each one is for
US monthly rates as of the launch. The first three are a consumer ladder; the fourth is a different product that happens to share the name.
$2.99–$3.99 / mo
A single app or feature, on its own. The cheapest way in if there is exactly one thing you want.
You are buyingAccess to one thing, not extra capacity across everything.
$7.99 / mo
Bundles three standalone plans around $11 bought separately and raises your AI usage on top.
You are buyingBreadth and depth at once. Compared with Premium.
$19.99 / mo
Core again, with higher limits and capabilities held back for this tier.
You are buyingMostly headroom. Worth it only if Core’s limits are the thing stopping you.
$14.99–$499 / mo
Verified badges, impersonation protection, 24/7 support, scheduling, exportable analytics, team accounts.
You are buyingIdentity and operations. Not a bigger AI allowance.
Already paying Meta for something? It is worth checking whether the ladder now covers it more cheaply compare against Meta Verified, Instagram Plus and WhatsApp Plus.
Moving up the ladder buys two different things
Tiers are usually compared on price, which hides the useful question. Core and Premium each improve two independent things, and knowing which one you are short of picks the tier for you.
The first is breadth how many separate paid things are covered. That is the bundling argument, and it settles with arithmetic rather than judgement. Core gathers three standalone plans that would cost around $11 bought individually into $7.99, which is roughly a quarter less for the same coverage.
The second is depth how much AI compute you are allowed. That is not a bundle, it is a bigger allowance, and it is the reason most people who pay end up paying.
These come packaged together, so it is easy to buy one while needing the other. Someone who uses a single Meta app but generates video heavily gets nothing from the bundling and everything from the allowance. Someone who dips into several apps lightly is in the opposite position, and may find a couple of standalone plans is all they ever need.
Premium is almost entirely a depth purchase. It is described as Core with higher limits again plus premium-only capabilities, and since what those capabilities are is not something this page can responsibly list, the honest way to judge it is by whether you are hitting a wall at Core.
Breadth how many things are covered
The bundling half. Core wraps three standalone plans into one price, and the saving is arithmetic rather than a matter of judgement: about $11 separately against $7.99 together.
You need this if: you would otherwise be holding two or three standalone plans at once. If you only want one thing, bundling buys you nothing.
Depth how much AI you are allowed
The allowance half, and the one that does the real work. Generating images, editing them and making video are the things that meter, so this is what you are buying if you make things rather than just use apps.
You need this if: you are hitting limits. Not if you are worried about hitting them what actually meters is narrower than people expect.
The third axis: identity and operations
Creator and business tiers are not a bigger version of Premium. Verified badges, impersonation protection, round-the-clock support, scheduling, exportable analytics and team accounts solve a different problem entirely.
You need this if: your account is a business asset rather than a personal one. The AI allowance is not the reason to be here.
Most people reading this do not need to pay
The free tier of Meta AI on a Mac is usable for ordinary work, and no subscription is required to install the app, sign in or use the assistant. These are the four situations where paying starts to make sense.
You are generating images or video in volume
This is the main one. Compute-heavy features are what meter, and video is the heavier of the two, so it is usually video work that turns a subscription from optional into obvious.
You are already holding two or three paid Meta plans
Here the maths does the deciding. If separate subscriptions add up to more than Core, consolidating is cheaper for the same coverage before any allowance increase is counted.
Your account is part of how you earn
Verification, impersonation protection and support response times stop being nice-to-haves when an account going wrong costs you work. That is the creator tier, not the AI ladder.
You keep running into a wall mid-task
Not hitting a limit occasionally being interrupted often enough that it changes how you work. That is a real cost worth pricing against $7.99.
If none of those describe you
Then the useful advice is to wait until one of them does. Limits are easier to judge after you have met them than in advance, and the free tier is generous enough that many people never do.
Starting free also tells you which axis you are short of, which is exactly the thing the pricing page cannot tell you. When you do subscribe, you will know whether you are buying breadth or depth and that decides the tier far more reliably than the price does.
Meta One questions
What is Meta One?
A single subscription that replaced the separate paid tiers Meta used to run across its apps. It launched globally on 16 September 2026 and gathered more than 15 million subscriptions and trial sign-ups in its first days.
Did anything I already had become paid?
No. Meta One was a consolidation rather than a new charge. What changed on the free tier is that the compute-heavy AI features image generation, video and long sessions picked up firmer rate limits. More on that.
How much does Meta One cost?
Standalone plans run from about $2.99 to $3.99 a month, Core is $7.99, Premium is $19.99, and creator and business tiers run from $14.99 up to $499. Those are US monthly rates at launch and they vary by region, app and account type the full breakdown.
Is Meta AI still free?
Yes. Meta’s position is that the core experience across its apps and Meta AI stays free, and the free tier of the Mac app is usable for ordinary work. A subscription raises limits rather than unlocking the assistant itself.
What does Core actually give me over Standalone?
Two different things at once: it bundles three standalone plans, which would cost around $11 bought separately against Core’s $7.99, and it raises your AI usage allowance. Those are separate benefits and it is worth knowing which one you are buying.
Is Premium worth two and a half times Core?
Only if you are hitting limits at Core. Premium is described as Core with higher limits again plus premium-only capabilities, and since what those capabilities are is not something this page can specify, the honest test is whether allowance is what you are short of. Compared properly.
What are the creator and business tiers for?
They are not more AI. They cover identity and operations verified badges, impersonation protection, 24/7 support, scheduling, exportable analytics and team accounts which is a different axis from the consumer ladder.
Do I need Meta One to use Meta AI on a Mac?
No. The Mac app is free and there is no trial to start. You would subscribe because you generate images or video in volume, not to get the app working.
How does Meta One compare to Meta Verified?
Meta Verified is one of the things Meta One consolidated, and the creator tiers are where verification now sits. If you are already paying for something separately, it is worth checking whether the new ladder covers it more cheaply side by side.
Will these prices stay the same?
The figures here are US monthly rates as of the 16 September 2026 launch, and pricing pages change faster than guides do. Treat them as the shape of the ladder rather than as a quote, and check Meta’s current terms before subscribing.
Work out which axis you are short of.
Breadth is arithmetic and you can do it today. Depth only becomes clear once you have actually hit a limit so there is no hurry.
